Guns N’ Roses Guitarist Slash Discusses Creating the New Box Set and Jokes About the Price!
Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash gave a recent interview to Revolver Magazine where he discussed the recently released ‘Appetite for Destruction’ box set and talked about how the package came together and how some people were complaining about the price.
HOW DID GUNS GO ABOUT CREATING THE MASSIVE NEW BOX SET FOR APPETITE FOR DESTRUCTION?
The box set was for the 30-year anniversary. We wanted to put everything in there that we’re aware of. There was stuff we had in the can that no one has ever heard — plus some live stuff and different things that the band has done and put in this one package. It was fun to get all that stuff together. It was cool to sit there and remaster it and hear that stuff again for what’s been years and years.
THE FULL-SIZED BOX ISN’T JUST MUSIC, BUT ALL THAT ARTWORK, JEWELRY AND MORE.
[Laughs] A lot of people were complaining about the price of it [$999], but there’s so much stuff in there. And the box itself is this wood thing that’s hand-done in leather. You can get all the material in a less grandiose package. It’s really cool. For me personally, it was cathartic to get that stuff out there.
Fan Asks Slash on Reddit About Unreleased Guns N’ Roses Song “Atlas Shrugged”
Slash took part in an “Ask Me Anything” on Reddit and took fan questions on a variety of topics including dinosaurs, Guns N’ Roses and his new record “Living the Dream”. One fan asked him about reptiles and the unreleased Guns N’ Roses song ‘Atlas Shrugged”
Slash dodged the question. the song “Atlas Shrugged” is a song Axl Rose came up with during the ‘Chinese Democracy’ years. It was rumored that it could be a potential song that Slash and Duff McKagan could play on if Guns N’ Roses were to make a new record.
“Hey dude I know you had a lot of snakes. Are you into lizards too? Ever have a monitor?
Also what do you think of high end amp modelers like Axe FX and Helix? Ever try one?
Ever hear Atlas Shrugged?”
“Yes I like reptiles in general even though I know I am known for keeping snakes but I did have a monitor and frilled lizards, bearded dragons, you name it.”
“How long will it take you to create the set list for the UK stretch of the tour?”
“It takes a second. There is sort of a process you pick a bunch of songs you want to play and some which might be deeper cuts that you want to play. You start to look at the dynamics at the start, middle and end of the show. It’s something I have been doing for years. We made some changes just last night to the set list we had from the start of the tour. It is something that once you put your mind to it is not that hard.”
“How much time on average goes into writing a guitar solo?”
“I don’t even like to use the term writing when it comes to guitar solo. 9/10 times they are spontaneous and when you play it the first time it plays off the cuff in the context of a song. Very rarely do you sit down and write something. I think the intro to Anastasia is more of an example of something that is written and even then that come out of an improvisational thing. Usually it is just a very spontaneous thing and in pre-production you start to play it with the melodies and becomes a part of the melodic structure. By the time you get to record the solo it has a structure and melodic direction that just sort of comes to you when you play that section of the song. You don’t really just sit down and write it at least for me.”
