Eddie Van Halen’s Final Years

The last 15 years for Van Halen have been full of start and stops and ups and downs. Today Rock N’ Roll True Stories takes a look at these years in today’s video. Check it out below!

What’s going on my fellow rock n’ rollers.
Don’t forget to hit the bell notification

icon to be notified every time i put out a
new video on my channel. Prior to the death

of guitarist Eddie Van Halen, it was widely
reported in the press that the guitarist was

quietly battling cancer once again for the
past 5 years or so. Eddie had been out of

the spotlight for the past several years with
his last notable appearance happening in 2015

when Van Halen did their last tour Frontman
David Lee Roth. n 2016 and 2017 he gave a

variety of interviews as well and appeared
on social media, but many people’s eyebrows

were raised in late 2019 and early 2020 when
frontman David Lee Roth was promoting his

upcoming Las Vegas residency when he bluntly
admitted that Van Halen was done. The band’s

history in the past decade and a half was
full of stop and starts and today we’re gonna

take a look at the past 15 years.

I had previously done a pretty in-depth video
of Van Halen’s ill-fated reunion tour with

Sammy Hagar in 2004. The link is down below
if you guys want to check it out. Today’s

story is going to continue on from where that
video left off. And following the ill-fated

tour Hagar he would return to his project
the Waboritas and bassist Michael Anthony

would join him. And by 2006 Michael Anthony
was out of Van Halen and accounts over why

he was fired vary pretty widely. Some think
it stem from the fact that Anthony remained

friends Hagar after the ill-fated reunion
tour. And Anthony would reveal he learned

of his dismissal after reading an article
online where Eddie announced his teenage son

Wolfgang was the band’s new bass player.
Anthony also pointed out that another source

of tension that could have been the Hagar’s
commercial ventures such as the Cabo Wabo

product line, Anthony’s hot sauce brand. and
he would also point to business people and

lawyers who seemed to have a divide and conquer
strategy telling interviewer Pete Murray in

February of 2020

“Unfortunately when you get a band, and
all of the big bands will tell you the same

thing, it turns into a big corporate thing
after awhile. Then the next thing you know,

each guy has got his own manager, his own
chef, his own this and that. Then everybody

has their own lawyer, that’s when the fun
really starts happening.” Anthony would say.

Anthony’s role role in the band appeared
to diminish as far back as when 1984 after

he was forced to sign away his royalties and
it was rumored he was out of the group by

the late 90’s, but this would prove not
to be true. And for the band’s reunion tour

with Hagar 2004 Anthony wasn’t even supposed
to be part of the trek, but Hagar insisted

he be involved. Anthony would end up joining
the band but took a significant pay cut.

In 2007 Van Halen announced a reunion with
singer David Lee Rothr. for a 25 date north

america tour. And as the band hit the road
they were met with mostly positive reviews,

but the tour would be interrupted as rumors
swirled of Eddie Van Halen re-entering rehab

after a backstage bust up with his son Wolfgang
The tour was a massive success and was the

most commercially successful tour the band
had done in their career grossing almost 100

million dollars. And 2007 was another important
year for Van Halen as they were inducted into

the rock n’ roll hall of fame, but none
of the members of the current lineup at the

time showed up. Eddie was said to be in rehab
while Alex and Dave declined the invitation.

The band would be inducted by supergroup Velvet
Revolver and the only inductees to show up

would be Michael and Sammy. It would be one
of the messiest rock n’ roll hall of fame

induction ceremonies, and that’s something
I’ll cover more in depth in a future story.

At the band’s last show as part of the 2008
reunion tour Roth would claim this trek wouldn’t

be the band’s last set of shows. Following
the tour Eddie would hint that the band was

working on new music, but his son Wolfgang
first needed to graduate from high school

and the Eddie needed to get surgery for his
hand as he was suffering from artheritis.

By 2012 Van Halen fans were rewarded with
their first full length studio album of new

material in 14 years with a Different Kind
of Truth. It was the first studio album to

feature bassist Wolfgang and the first album
of new completely material in 28 years to

feature David Lee Roth.

Even though it had been years since Van Halen
put out a new album A Different Kind of Truth

debuted at number 2 on the billboard charts
selling 188,000 copies during it’s first

week of release. Van Halen, would hit the
road in 2012 to support the record and whiie

the tour was a commercial success and many
shows were sold out, the wheels appeared to

come off pretty early as the tour was abruptly
stopped as the guitarist claimed the band

members were not fighting, but rather tired
from working for a year and a half straight.

The tour would resume in 2013 when the band
played overseas shows including Japan in which

one that was recorded and released on the
band’s first live album with Roth, 2015’s

Tokyo Dome, Live in Concert. Between tours
it appeared that David Lee Roth and Eddie

Van Halen had little contact with each other
as Eddie was asked about the status of Van

Halen in early 2015 and he responded saying
I’d love to make a studio record. Depends

on everybody’s timing. I don’t know what Dave
Lee Roth is up to now. I don’t know if he’s

living in New York or Japan or wherever he
is.

Then literally a month later Van Halen would
announce another tour with Roth fronting the

band once again across 39 shows that would
take place in the US and Canada. a. In April

of that year Eddie would tell Rolling Stone
that the band would probably record be in

the studio to record a new album following
the tour. Eddie’s last concert of his career

would take place at the Hollywood Bowl in
Los Angeles as Van Halen was playing a pair

of shows almost five years prior to his death
on Oct 4th, 2015.

It would be around this time that Eddie was
supposedly diagnosed with throat cancer after

having previously survived tongue cancer in
the early 2000’s which resulted in him losing

about a third of his tongue. Eddie would reveal
to billboard the source of his cancer Van

Halen theorizing that years of putting copper
and brass guitar picks in his mouth probably

caused his throat cancer. saying“I used
metal picks—they’re brass and copper—which

I always held in my mouth, in the exact place
where I got the tongue cancer,” Now it’s

also important to note that Eddie was also
a smoker taking up the habit at age 12 and

also had his bout with drugs, but he would
claim his lungs were completely clean.

And 2016-2017 were pretty quiet years in the
van halen camp. Eddie would make sporadic

appearances and give a few interviews, but
nothing appeared to be going on with van halen

camp. David Lee Roth gave some fans hope in
late 2018 when he revealed that van halen

would be playing Yankees stadium alongside
other bands that hadn’t yet been confirmed

but he would name drop Guns N’ Roses, Metallica
and Foo Fighters. It was also around this

time that former bassist Michael Anthony would
reveal in an interview that he was called

by van Halen’s manager Irving Azoff about
possibly joining the band on a 2019 summer

tour, but he never heard anything after that
phone call.

Then the news that shattered the rock community
came out in October of 2019 when TMZ reported

that Eddie had been flying back and forth
between his home in California and Germany

to receive radiation treatment for the past
5 years to deal with his cancer treatment.

The same month TMZ also reported he had a
bad reaction to cancer drugs that he was taking

resulting in severe abdominal pain and that
he had to be hospitilized. Following his diagnosis

though it appeared that Eddie was living as
normal of a life as he could as he would be

spotted at a Tool Concert as some fan asked
him to take his photo of him without exactly

knowing who Eddie was. It was also around
this time the guitarist appeared at a car

dealership and posed with a fan. And in September
of 2019 Roth would say talk Detroit radio

station WRIF, about Van Halen’s rumoured
tour saying “That’s been canceled a number

of times, and I think Van Halen’s finished,
and this residency is the next phase.” referring

to his upcoming las vegas shows in 2020
The vocalist went on to suggest that guitarist

Eddie Van Halen is laying low these days,
saying, “I’ve inherited the band de facto

— whatever that means. I think it means
if you inherit it, carry this proudly. Van

Halen isn’t gonna be coming back in the
fashion that you know. And that being said,

Eddie’s got his own story to tell. [It’s]
not mine to tell .”

Sadly in January 2020 while promoting his
las vegas residency, David Lee Roth told a

las vegas publication Ed’s not doing well,
and singing and dancing is a perishable skill.

If you have the capacity, it’s something
that has to be used routinely, if not for

the thrill of it and the magic of creating
with other incandescent spirits.” In a separate

interview the singer would comment on his
guitarist’s health saying “I hear all

the same rumors that you do and it’s not
my place to guess” he’d say

Then the news dropped on October 6th that
Eddie Van Halen passed away after a long battle

with throat cancer.
According to a source close to the guitarist’s

family, Eddie saw a rapid decline in his health
in his final few days. According to people

magazine Eddie was in a great deal of pain
in his final days, and the source would go

on to say during the quarantine, everyone
around Eddie was even more cautious about

his health and his family truly protected
him,” and a second source close to him would

claim that even his bandmates and his friends
weren’t aware of how dire his health sitution

was.

While the initial reports of his death came
from source close to the family who weren’t

supposed to speak on the matter, his son wolfgang
confirmed the news on social media saying

“I can’t believe I’m having to write this,
but my father, has lost his long and arduous

battle with cancer this morning, Every moment
I’ve shared with him on stage and off stage

was a gift My heart is broken and I don’t
think I’ll ever fully recover from this loss”

he’d say
Following the news of his death, he would

receive tributes from his current and former
bandmates, but perhaps the most heart warming

story was that he seemed to be on good terms
with Sammy Hagar once again. I was listening

to the howard stern’s show yesterday on my
way to work and they had actually asked for

Sammy to come on the show to talk about Eddie,
but he politely declined, instead sending

a statement that Stern read live on the air
saying:

“Eddie and I had been texting, and it’s been
a love fest since we started communicating

earlier this year,” Hagar wrote “We both agreed
not to tell anyone, because of all the rumors

it would stir up about a reunion, etc., and
we both knew that wasn’t gonna happen. But

he also didn’t want anyone to know about his
health.”

For Hagar the recent deaths of David Bowie
and Glenn Frey changed his perspectives about

living his life with regret saying. “It just
makes you stop and think that with my relationship

with Eddie Van Halen and stuff that’s always
been in the toilet, it makes you say, ‘I don’t

want to be buried with any regrets or bad
vibes like that,'” said Hagar. “It makes you

want to be just friends with everybody and
say, ‘Hey look, forget it.'” That does it
