Vessel From Sleep Token – What is His Story?

Share Post :

Vessel is the enigma wrapped in a mystery, wrapped in a mask, wrapped in… well, another mask. For those not in the know, Vessel is the frontman of the British rock band Sleep Token, a group that has been baffling and delighting fans since 2016.

They’re known for blending metal, pop, and R&B elements into a sound that’s as unique as their masked, anonymous appearance.

But who is Vessel really? And what’s the deal with this whole “worshipping an ancient deity” thing?

Vessel, or Leo George Faulkner if you’re on a first-name basis with him (which, let’s face it, none of us are), was born on December 22, 1993.  Before he became the masked figure leading Sleep Token, he had a solo project called Dusk and even a YouTube channel titled Monkeyl0rd22.

He was also a former writer for Sick Chipse. So, he’s been around the creative block a few times. Leo was also a member of a band called Blacklit Canopy, where his face could be seen behind the mask.

Yes, he wasn’t always so keen on the whole anonymity thing. Alongside Adam Pedder, Leo’s name pops up in the ASCAP Repertory, adding another layer to the puzzle that is Vessel.

And if you needed more proof, just check out the lyrics from Sleep Token’s song “Take Me Back To Eden” where he hints at his Blacklit past.

Origins and Deity Worship

Now, let’s get to the juicy part: the legend. The story goes that Vessel was visited in a dream by an ancient deity named Sleep.  Sleep promised him “glory and magnificence” in exchange for his servitude and loyalty.

Like any reasonable person, Vessel decided to take up this offer. Who wouldn’t want a deity promising you all that jazz? From then on, Vessel’s mission has been to worship Sleep, and this forms the backbone of the band’s lore and thematic content. It’s all very dramatic and, honestly, a bit bonkers, but it’s what makes Sleep Token stand out.

The Formation of Sleep Token

Sleep Token band members

Sleep Token isn’t your run-of-the-mill band. The band comes from London, like Slash and many other rock icons. They’re an anonymous collective, with Vessel being the central figure—the human vessel, if you will, for the deity Sleep.  The anonymity and masks are crucial to their identity, putting the art and message front and center, rather than the individuals behind it.

Their music is a mix of love, loss, and worship themes, often leading fans to speculate whether the lyrics reflect Vessel’s relationship with Sleep or his personal experiences.  Each album and song is a piece of a larger narrative puzzle, inviting listeners to dive deep into the mythos of the band. Here’s their discography so far:

  • Sundowning (2019)
  • This Place Will Become Your Tomb (2021)
  • Take Me Back to Eden (2023)

Origins and Performance Style

Sleep Token’s origin story is as cryptic as their lyrics. Inspired by a dream involving Sleep, their live performances—referred to as ‘Rituals’—are an otherworldly experience.  Band members don cloaks and masks, transforming the stage into a mystical space that feels more like a congregation than a concert.

Their sound is a blend of tech-metal, pop, and R&B, creating a heavy yet accessible musical landscape. This unique combination, along with their ritualistic performances, sets them apart from typical metal bands. With all that said, their popularity doesn’t come as a surprise.

Theatrical Influence and Fanbase

Drawing comparisons to other masked bands like Ghost, Slipknot, or Schamasch Sleep Token takes the theatrical element to a darker, more detailed level.  Their fanbase, known as ‘the congregation,’ is deeply engaged in decoding the band’s cryptic messages and symbolism.

The anonymity of the band members adds to the allure, creating a community that focuses on the music and experience rather than the individual identities.

Recent Developments and Popularity

Sleep Token Vessel identity

2023 was a big year for Sleep Token. They dropped several new tracks in January, which sent their visibility and fan engagement through the roof.

Their UK tour and new releases saw a sharp rise in Spotify listeners and social media activity, proving that their unique approach is resonating with a growing audience.

Fan Theories and Community

Sleep Token maintains a robust online presence, particularly on platforms like Discord and Reddit, where fans share theories and discuss the band’s lyrics and symbolism.

Of course, this is not the first time we’ve encountered a masked band, but there is certain aura and mysticism that puts Sleep Token in special category.

Cultural Impact and Recognition

The band has received praise for its innovative blend of genres and the unique concert experience it offers.  Notable figures like Justin Hawkins of The Darkness have even commented on Sleep Token’s potential to bring progressive elements into mainstream music. It’s not just about the music but about the entire package—the mystery, the mythology, the masks.

The Bigger Picture

So, what’s the story of Vessel? It’s a tale of a man who claims to worship an ancient deity, leads a band that combines metal with pop and R&B, and keeps his identity a secret behind a mask.

It’s bizarre, intriguing, and undeniably captivating. It doesn’t matter if you’re drawn to the music, the mystery, or the mythology, there’s no denying that Sleep Token—and Vessel—have carved out a unique niche in the music world.

To wrap it up, if you’re into music that’s as heavy on the narrative as it is on the riffs, Sleep Token is your band. And Vessel? He’s the enigmatic, masked frontman leading the charge, one cryptic song at a time.
